Visit Ala-Kul Lake in just one day!
How It Works
Stage 1. Early Start (6:00 AM)
We will pick you up from Karakol and drive 15-17 km into the Karakol Valley using a sturdy UAZ 450 ($130), a classic exUSSR off-road vehicle. After about 1.5 hours, we will reach the starting point of the hike at 2500 meters.
Stage 2. Hiking to Ala-Kul (4-5 Hours)
The trail constantly goes uphill, so be prepared for a steady climb. You can always take short breaks to rest in the shade of fir and pine trees along the way.
- Pass through Sirota Camp, a common overnight spot for trekkers.
- See a beautiful waterfall, where the river cascades down from the lake.
- Climb steadily up to Ala-Kul Lake at 3,500 meters.
"The hike was one of the prettiest I have ever done. Even with the lake frozen was still worth as the entire path is outstanding. However, be aware that was also one of the most difficult trails we have ever done as most of the path is rocky so it is slippery and tough to walk on."
Stage 3. Enjoy the View
The earlier we arrive, the better the views, as mountain weather tends to change in the afternoon. You will have about 1-2 hours at the lake to take photos, relax, and have lunch or snacks.
Stage 4. Heading Back
After enjoying the lake, we will start the descent, where our UAZ will be waiting to take us back to Karakol, arriving at your hotel around 6:00 PM.
No guide is planned to accompany you, as the trail is clear and well-marked. However, if you prefer to have a guide for extra support, you can optionally hire one from us. Please also bring your own food, as we do not provide lunch or snacks (we can provide that optionally too).
"We booked a UAZ van to the first bridge to start our hike to Ala-Kul lake. Rafik, our driver, was punctual in picking us up from our hotel and proved to be an expert driver on very uneven mountain roads. He was also on time for the return pickup, which we really appreciated.
Special thanks to Sergei for organizing everything and getting back to us in record time.
The hike from the first bridge to Ala-Kul takes about 4 hours one way for experienced and fit hikers. It's not an easy walk because of the altitude and terrain, but absolutely worth it. Highly recommended!"
